CHRISTMAS VISIT FROM SANTA – RYEDALE LIONS
Ho Ho Ho! Santa Claus came to the village on Monday 9th December 2013. The Ryedale Lions were raising money for local charities by taking Santa around the villages of the area. They do a brilliant job of decorating their vehicle with bright lights, playing seasonal music and bringing a little Christmas cheer!
CHRISTMAS CRAFT FAIR
A Christmas Craft Fair, in the village hall on Saturday 30th November 2013, proved to be a very popular event. The hall was full of stalls, with many of the locals showing their craft skills. Santa met all the visitors and delicious cakes and refreshments were served by the helpers. The fair raised £448.05 for church yard funds.
THE PEACOCK QUIZ
The Peacock Quiz was held in the village hall on Wednesday 23rd October 2013. Some delicious (Auntie Anne’s, Helmsley) Meat Pies were served, with mushy peas & gravy, to over 50 quiz participants. The quiz was very enjoyable indeed and £262 was raised on the night for village hall funds. Thanks to Richard and Pat, plus all helpers.
RECIPE BOOK – YORKSHIRE AIR AMBULANCE
Ann Eddon from Whitethorn Farm (Laura’s Cottage) has been contributing to a cookery book that features traditional farmhouse fare. Ann gave one of her favourite recipes for inclusion in the book.

A Mell Supper was held in the village hall on Saturday 5th October 2013. The Ladies of the W.I. provided a lovely meal and that was followed with entertainment by a magician. Well done to the Ladies on keeping an old tradition alive!
HARVEST FESTIVAL CELEBRATIONS
The Methodist Chapel held their Harvest Festival service on Friday 4th October 2013. The service was led by Revd. Ruth Duck. An auction of gifts and produce followed, with David Morris kindly being the auctioneer. Tea & biscuits were served afterwards. The Harvest celebrations continued on Sunday 6th October 2013 with a morning service led by Mrs. Helen Leng. The proceeds from the collection and sale of produce amounted to £225.07. Many thanks to all that helped and made contributions.
Four young singers brightened a cold, rainy Friday night with a Simply Musicals concert in the village hall. On Friday 13th September 2013, James Aconley, Rebekah Kelly, Olivia Burke & Nathan Jenkins performed a wide selection on songs from the worlds greatest musicals, including The Blues Brothers and Les Miserables. Congratulations to all four of them for giving us a lovely evening of entertainment.
VAL BARNABY EXHIBITION
Along with the monthly coffee morning there was an exhibition of the work of Val Barnaby in the village hall on Tuesday 3rd September 2013. Val was joined by pupils and friends, with an outstanding display of paintings and crafts on show for visitors.
The annual Bank Holiday cake and produce stall on Monday 26th August 2013, under the Chestnut Tree, raised around £140 for church funds.
VINTAGE CAR RALLY
The gathering or old motorcycles and motor cars was a brilliant occasion this year! Apart from an early shower the weather was very kind and there was a wonderful show of vintage vehicles, including around 20 Harley Davidson motorbikes, for the visitors to see! It was also a fund raising event for the village hall and over £1,200 was raised for hall funds. Many thanks to organizers, Angela and Graham Carter, the exhibitors and everyone else that helped and attended. Event photos – Page 1 – Page 2!
CAR BOOT STALLS
St Gregory’s Church held a fund raiser at the village hall on Saturday 27th July 2013. For visitors there were car boot stalls, bric-a-brac stall, garden stall, tombola and a raffle. Delicious home-made produce plus tea and coffee was served by Church helpers. An amount of £907.12 was raised for Church funds. Many thanks to all that attended and contributed.
Phil Cornelius gave a presentation at the village hall to The Heritage Group on Wednesday 18th July 2013. Phil showed a combination of poems and photographs from the local area.
CHARITY TRACTOR RUN
On Sunday 30th June 2013 the annual charity tractor run came through the village after starting at Hen Flatts Farm. Over 50 tractors took part. The charity this year was raising money for the Great North Air Ambulance.
NEW PARISH PRIEST
The Reverend Michael Sinclair has been appointed the new Priest in Charge of the Benefice of Lastingham (which includes Cropton). He is here on a part-time basis for two years. We wish him all the best in his new role.
RACHEL & FRIENDS
On Saturday 15th June 2013 Rachel Anderson organized a concert in the village hall. Rachel, her father Peter Reynolds, Viv the piano accompanist and local group ‘The Four Quarters’ combined to give a thoroughly enjoyable evening of entertainment. The event raised over £250 for village hall funds.
The annual Bank Holiday Cake Stall on Monday 27th May 2013 raised £270.81 for church funds.
BEADLAM TRACTOR RUN
The annual ‘Beadlam Tractor Run’ came through the village on Sunday 5th May 2013. Over 200 tractors took part in a fund raising event for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. The annual ‘Spring Fair’ took place in the village hall on Saturday 4th May 2013. Stalls included cakes & produce, bric-a-brac, books, plants & tombola. Admission included a lovely Cream Tea. The Methodist Chapel raised £496.50 with this event & wish to thank all that helped, contributed & attended.
SONGS FROM MOVIES TO MUSICALS
On Wednesday 17th April 2013 James Aconley & Katie Gregson sang a number of songs from well known movies and musicals to an appreciative audience in the village hall. These two talented young performers were teriffic individually and as a duo.
A JOURNEY ON THE TRANS-SIBERIAN EXPRESS
The ladies of the W.I. invited Vic Worrall to give a talk about his train journey from Moscow to Beijing on the Trans-Siberian Express. The interesting presentation by Vic, complete with photos, took place in the village hall on Wednesday 10th April 2013.
The 8th Peacock Quiz was held in the village hall on Wednesday 20th March 2013. Delicious Pies and Peas were served before the quiz. Amazingly 5 teams tied with a score of 51. Many thanks to all helpers.
TABLE TOP SALE
On Saturday 16th March 2013 there was a well attended ‘Table Top’ sale in the village hall. The event raised £249 for village hall funds.
GROW WITH JOE – ‘AN EVENING WITH JOE MAIDEN’
On Wednesday 6th March 2013 Joe Maiden, from Huby near Harrogate, gave a fascinating talk at the village hall about his lifetime of work in the horticultural world. A few anecdotes were mixed with some handy hints and tips on gardening to make a very entertaining and informative evening for all.
HERITAGE GROUP – ANNUAL REVIEW
On Wednesday 23rd January 2013 the Heritage Group held their annual review in the village hall. Philip Coombes chaired the meeting & reviewed the previous years activities. Sue Coombes showed a selection of photos, including some contributed by Johnny Sewell. Mulled wine and mince pies were served afterwards.
